Learning Intention #8:
I can use, create or choose meaningful, appropriate assessment tools. I can demonstrate various uses of learning progressions such as the BC Performance Standards and Core Competencies.
I chose a numeracy assessment tool and various literacy assessment tools as a demonstration of having met the above learning intention. I feel that together, they help demonstrate my ability to choose/use meaningful, appropriate assessment tools. The first photo is of the numeracy assessment that I used to help my sponsor teacher in determining the numeracy levels of the students in her class. The second photo is of the various literacy assessment tools from the assessment clothesline project that I participated in.
Having the opportunity to run through the numeracy assessment with several students really allowed me to observe the smallest differences in how children think and respond to not only numeracy, but also in the given situation. This experience really emphasized the importance of utilizing assessment tools such as this one as it not only allows you to identify a particular area a student is struggling in, but also helps provide direction and guide future lessons for the entire class. Participating in the assessment clothesline really challenged me as a teacher. I really had to focus on the student's work, taking each element, with the exception of their name and grade, into consideration in order to determine where on the continuum to place it. There were many times, where my colleagues and I engaged in quite the discussion as where we felt a student's work belonged on the continuum. I found that these discussions really challenged my thinking and made me analyze/articulate my reasoning for the position I had chosen. This experience also reinforced my understanding that assessment can be very much subject to one's opinion and one's ability to support their opinion with appropriate assessment tools. |
