Toolbelt Theory"Toolbelt Theory is based around the idea that, as humans, we are tool users, and that we choose tools most effectively when that choice begins with the Task at hand, and then considers the Environment in which that task must be performed, the Skill set of the individual, and the Tools which are available. Technology ToolbeltIf like the Toolbelt Theory suggests and humans are, for the most part, tool users, then as educators we must teach our students how to assemble their own readily available collection of tools. We must teach them how to choose and use these tools appropriately: based on the task to be performed, the environment in which they find themselves, their skills and capabilities at that time, and the ever changing world of tools that are available.
Now, the thing to remember about toolbelts is that no two individuals ever really need the same one. Even though they may start with the same tools, after a short period of time they will begin to look different and eventually entirely different. Take carpenters for example, each may begin with a hammer, a speed square, a pencil, a standard tape measure, and an assortment of nails but after just a couple days the toolbelts will begin to look differently. For instance, I would trade out the standard tape measure for an imperial one whereas someone else may prefer the metric tape measure. I would also carry a selection of screws and my impact driver as opposed to just a hammer. Then depending on the task at hand, installing drywall or laying tile for example, the tools in my toolbelt would change yet again. Not to mention how carpenters likes to wear or access the tools in their toolbelts, some prefer their tape measure in the back others the front (I prefer mine to be in the back). The same goes for our learners in the classroom. Just like the way each student learns is as unique as their fingerprints, each toolbelt needs to be as unique as that individual. Meaning we need to customize each toolbelt so that it best supports the individual using it. Infographic created using Piktochart
